A big thank you to Joy Slater who was my Make a Difference Days partner on Monday as we helped out at the South Cowichan Seniors Society Luncheon in Cobble Hill. It was a busy three hour shift as we joined their volunteer team with all of the duties in serving a home cooked meal to the over 120 local seniors in attendance. Joy and I did a little bit of everything. We helped to fill coffee and tea jugs, work the assembly line in dishing up the delicious spaghetti and meatball lunch, serve the apple crumble, clear the plates and help with all the put away and clean up. It was amazing how organized the team was in having everything run like clockwork and to see so many happy faces brought together. The Society has been hosting the monthly luncheon now for more than four year as a way of improving the lives of seniors living in the South Cowichan area. Many seniors are isolated living in their rural community and many do not have the means or ability to prepare a large home cooked meal. The regular luncheons have been a great way of connecting the community, building friendships and keeping people happy . A huge shout out to Gerry Giles who was instrumental in getting the luncheons up and running and to the amazing team of volunteers who come out to help in putting it on every month. Our Island Savings a division of First West Credit Union team of volunteers will be back to help them for a second luncheon at the end of the month.
