Volunteer Position

Language Learner

Volunteers can learn a language, gain cultural awareness, and change a life by helping English learners integrate into community life.

Trinity Lutheran Church is seeking volunteers interested in sharing their knowledge of the English language in a Language Partnership Program. What is unique about this partnership is that the fluent English speakers are invited to learn their partner’s mother tongue, in a mutually supportive relationship. Using structure offered by our lead facilitator, who is a trained ESL instructor, this program offers the opportunity to meet once or twice per week for an hour. Volunteers will be paired with language learners, ideally according to common interests, and will begin with three structured meetings at the church to build relationships and get started. The program will progress to volunteers meeting with their language partner in a public setting, such as a local coffee shop. Throughout the program there will be an exchange of 50% English for 50% Mandarin/Punjabi/Hindi/other. The facilitator will work with each volunteer to accommodate schedules and will provide training, resources and encouragement at initial stages. This is not formal instruction but rather a casual exchange to mutually broaden language and cross-cultural learning. Please note, we respect all faith traditions and are not using religious content for dialogs, but offering practical engagement for everyday living; the church is serving as a tool for connecting language learners. A criminal record check and a one hour boundary training will be required by all volunteers.

This volunteer position has no scheduling requirements attached to it. You can work out your availability and time commitment directly with the organizer.
